Description

The Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model (TREM), a manualized group therapy intervention, has been adapted for adolescents into G-TREM (for girls and young women) and B-TREM (for boys). These programs focus on trauma recovery, coping skills, peer support, and empowerment to heal from physical, sexual, or emotional abuse. The adolescent modules specifically tailor the psycho-educational content to developmental needs. Key components of G-TREM (ages 12-18) include helping girls and young women understand the impacts of abuse or witnessing violence. It covers boundaries, self-care, peer pressure, developing trust, and self-soothing strategies using structured conversations and experiential activities. B-TREM focuses on adolescent boys, addressing emotional and mental symptoms while helping them replace trauma-related compulsive or aggressive behaviors with positive coping mechanisms. The training will begin with an overview of adolescent trauma, including brief discussions of prevalence and impact. After an introduction to the overall rationale and structure of G-TREM and B-TREM, the trainer will provide a session-by-session review of the model with emphasis on goals, process, and suggestions for effective group leadership. Time will be reserved for questions and discussion.

Objectives

Participants will:

  1. Learn basic prevalence data about adolescent trauma.
  2. Learn about gender similarities and differences in the impact of trauma and in coping styles.
  3. Learn the key differences between G-TREM and B-TREM approaches.
  4. Review the content and core skill-based objectives of G-TREM and B-TREM.
