OSUS encourages South Carolinians to take the first step toward a tobacco-free life
The South Carolina Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities’ Office of Substance Use Services (OSUS) is encouraging individuals who smoke to use the Great American Smokeout as a chance to make a meaningful change. The annual national event invites people to pause, reflect on their health and take the first step toward quitting tobacco. For many, it serves as the moment that encourages long-term change.
“Tobacco use continues to harm individuals and families across our state, but quitting is possible for anyone who takes that first step,” said Sara Goldsby, director of OSUS. “The Great American Smokeout gives people a clear moment in time to say ‘today is the day I choose my health.’”
Tobacco remains one of the leading causes of preventable illness and death nationwide. In South Carolina, BHDD works with local providers and community partners to reduce the impact of substance use and promote healthier lives by connecting individuals to tools, peer support and resources that help them move forward.
OSUS encourages individuals to start with simple actions they can take right now. These include choosing a quit date, reaching out for support, exploring nicotine replacement options and celebrating small milestones. Even one smoke-free day can improve health and build confidence, and repeated attempts bring people closer to lasting success.
