Why YAP-P Exists

South Carolina is seeing epidemic-level increases in the occurrence of mental and behavioral health issues among our youth. Unfortunately, there are limited referral options among child and adolescent psychiatrists in the state, impacting timely access to care for these young patients.

We bridge the gap to psychiatric care by giving South Carolina prescribers direct access to expert consultation, training, and clinical resources. This collaborative program helps providers identify, assess and manage youth mental health concerns, improving access to care and supporting better outcomes for children, adolescents and young adults.

How We Bridge the Gap

YAP-P offers free support for pediatric and primary care providers seeing patients aged 0-25, including:

  • provider-to-provider consultation
  • clinical training opportunities
  • mental and behavioral health resources

What Providers Are Saying

“Across South Carolina, pediatricians, families, and children are benefitting from the Youth Access to Pediatric Psychiatry (YAP-P) consult line. The YAP-P line allows pediatric and primary care providers to respond to challenges more quickly and learn new skills to help families with behavioral health concerns in the primary care setting.”

-Martha Edwards, MD, FAAP, President of SC Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics

" I received guidance on the best way to treat [the patient] acutely. The psychiatrist also recommended a course of action to get her into long-term care. Truly a wonderful service. I did not realize how much I needed this service until I used it."

- LaChiana Hamilton, DNP, CPNP-PC, Chief of Pediatrics BJH Comprehensive Health Services

"After consulting, I was able to identify that [a] student was being treated for ADHD and, after I made a referral to psych for reevaluation, was incorrectly diagnosed and changed to a mood stabilizer. Her behavior improved tremendously. The patient is now doing well in school and with peers. I’m truly grateful for the support I received from the providers I consulted with. My experience with YAP-P helped me discover how much I value this specialty and ultimately inspired me to pursue further training.”

– Misty Lovell, PCPNP, Prisma Health School–Based Health Center
